Electric Vehicles (EV) will be the next generational leap in the automotive industry in Singapore. As part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, Singapore aims to electrify its EV population as one of its ways to achieve 100% cleaner energy by 2040. Today we explore some interesting facts about EVs.
1. Cheaper to run
One of the major benefits of switching to an EV is the savings that you get. On average it costs between $30 to $60 (depending on charging provider) to fully charge your car as compared to using Petrol which can cost more than $100/full tank. With more and more charging points being created, charging your EV will get easier by the day.

2. Easier to maintain
An EV has far fewer moving parts than your traditional petrol-powered car. This makes servicing your EV is much easier and cheaper as there are fewer repairs to be made. The usual suspects in servicing a car such as changing brake pads don’t need to be replaced as frequently due to regenerative braking. You’ll only need to change your battery after a few years as stated by the manufacturer of your car. Assuming you spend about $1000-$1500 a year on maintenance, you can expect to save about $500 – $750 a year in maintenance when you switch to an EV.

3. Better for the environment
We all know that petrol-powered cars emit a lot of CO2 that is harmful to our environment. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of CO2 per year. In comparison, according to the Land Transport Authority an EV emits less than half of the CO2 emissions per Km. This results in a reduction of 1.5 to 2 million tonnes. That’s equivalent to nearly 4% of Singapore’s total emissions!

4. First Mover Advantage
To boost Electric Vehicle adoption rates, Singapore has implemented Vehicle Emission Schemes rebates. Just by choosing to drive an Electric Vehicle you could be saving up to $25,000! Coupled with its cheaper maintenance and the cost of charging, the savings you get from an Electric Vehicle are well worth the switch!
5. Charging is becoming more convenient
One of the misconceptions about driving an Electric Vehicle is the hassle of finding a charging station, especially if you are not fortunate enough to live in a landed home. The good news is the government is planning to ramp up the availability of chargers all around our sunny island! According to the Land Transport Authority, every HDB town will be EV-Ready by 2025. Residents can rest easy knowing that they will have access to charging points that will be deployed in nearly 2,000 HDB carparks islandwide!
